Should the United States pull out of Iraq? This is a very difficult question to answer, but I am going to say yes. It's time to leave.
In the past, I thought it simply didn't matter anymore. I didn't think that withdrawing our troops or not would make a difference in this war. I saw and still do see Iraq as a war that never needed to happen.
The soldiers are accomplishing things such as building schools, restoring power, jobs; etc. But then one of our enemies comes along, and just blows it all up. And perhaps some areas in Iraq are secure. But in the grand scheme of things, I don't think the accomplishments that our soldiers make in Iraq will be enough.
These different Iraqi factions and Al Qaeda seem determined to kill our soldiers at any cost. Some of them are even willing to strap a bomb to their chest, and blow themselves up in order to win.
I know I'm not a soldier fighting in Iraq. I will never be a soldier, and I realize that I don't know everything that is going on in that country. However, I don't believe that the situation is really winnable for the military. If the media is to be believed, many generals in the military apparently share my viewpoint.
I've listened to many different people discussing how we can win this war. Some say to drop nuclear weapons on Iraq (horrible idea), some say to send more troops, and others say to ask our allies for more aid.
And some people say bring back the draft. The draft? This would be a disaster in so many different ways. First, it would be terribly expensive. The military would have to train all of these draftees to use the sophisticated technology that is currently employed by the soldiers. And don't forget that these draftees don't want to be in the war in the first place.
These days, you really need to be fairly smart to join the military. Technology is very important. Also, the military would have to provide food and shelter to all of these new recruits. That's even more money. And then there is the medical cost to all of this. Depression, lost limbs, paralysis; etc would occur in huge numbers.
Another side effect of the draft would be that large numbers of people would start to hate the military. Mothers, fathers, brothers; etc who lose their loved ones because of the draft would be furious. And guess who some of them would take out their fury on?
There is another option that I heard on the news the other day. One politician suggested that if we leave Iraq, the Sunni and Shiites would turn on Al Qaeda. Apparently,
