Self-help books critiqued

I think some people get carried away by reading all the self-help/spirituality books now available. It's as if the act of reading as many of these books as one can will in and of itself lead to a state of "enlightenment".

Which I believe fits into today's societies expectations perfectly. It's a "what have you done for me lately" world we now live in. The latest diet, the latest fad, the latest self-help guru...on and on and on.

I've fallen into that trap more often than I'd care to admit. What I've found is that most of the work I've seen is regurgitated material, simply presented a new way. What most fail to understand is that enlightenment, awareness, and consciousness are hard work, which so many of the self-help and spiritual books on the market today might mention but rarely make their focus.

And who can blame them? People don't want to hear that they might have to work at something if they want to gain any result. Especially when it comes to thinking, to feeling, to believing. In my work as a Life Coach I see it constantly, and I find it sad. The one secret that I know is this....yes, the work is hard, difficult, emotional...but as we move forward, as we find our truest selves, the work becomes easier. Consciousness manifested is consciousness lived.
