This is like my psychology and sociology classes all over again.
I'm Asian-American. I was born in Korea and adopted when I was 3 months old. I like to use the term "I'm as American as they come." There's virtually nothing about me other than my outward appearance that would separate me from the next person when it comes to college admissions.
When I went to college, I received $12,000 just for being of a different race. Was I going to decline just because I'm "more American than Korean"? Absolutely not, I needed that money for college just as everyone else does.
But I do consider it a gift and I'm incredibly grateful for receiving that money to further my education. But is it fair? Is it fair that just because I look different, I received that money rather than someone of a different decent who needed it more than I did?
In today's society, I know there are still challenges when it comes to differences in race. I'm not living in a huge city by any means, but with a population of over 240,000 I would think there's enough diversity here to open some eyes. But now, I still walk down the street (usually on a weekend night to go to different clubs and bars) and I'll hear racial comments about me being Asian. At this point, it doesn't phase me but my friends will still be shocked that I hear comments like that.
Everyone gets criticized at one point in their lives...everyone gets made fun of by someone sooner or later.
But because my criticism and ridicule is due to my race, I get $12,000 and I don't think that's right.
