Race should continue to be one consideration, out of many in college admissions. Colleges and universities are not only institutions of higher learning, but also institutions which teach students how to interact on a social level and cope in society. Society is not homogeneous, but rather, society is diverse, with many different racially ethnic groups, often having their own unique languages and culture. Colleges should be a reflection of society as a whole. One of the ways colleges can achieve this goal is by taking a student's race into account during the application process.
Using race as one factor also gives a college admissions board a means of selecting between two equally qualified candidates. Considering a scenario where there are two equally qualified candidates, let's say a white student and a minority student. Assume the white student and the minority students have stellar high school grades, had a phenomenal score on the ACT and SAT, and both participated in impressive and noteworthy extracurricular activities. How does the college admissions board make its decision. Now let's assume that the white student is from an affluent family, attended a private school and essentially went through high school with very little difficulty. Now assume that the minority student is not from a privileged background, had to overcome a lot of adversity during high school,or is from a country where they were fortunate enough to have survived that far, yet still maintained superior grades and achieved high tests scores. Perhaps the college admissions board decides to admit the minority student because not only did the minority student show academic prowess, but also the ability to cope with and overcome adversity. These are intangible skills that cannot be measure by test scores, but demonstrate the ability to be a successful college student and member of society.
Those opposed to using race a basis in college admissions often do so because they feel that minorities are inherently unqualified or believe that the sole basis for their admittance into college was their race. They also feel that using race is tantamount to maintaining a quota system, whereby colleges simply admit students solely on the basis of race for the sake of having a certain percentage of minority students. This is intellectually lazy thinking and does not delve deeper into the issue. It cannot automatically be assumed that because a white student did not get into the college
