There is no particular age that is acceptable. For it depends on the child's own level of maturity - so it is a case by case basis. Since this is a big responsibility, you should give your child smaller responsibilities as they do age. When they have proven and built trust to handle those responsibilities, it is time to move up.
To Start:
If you need to be busy outside or in another part of the house for an extended period, let the child know and observe behavior. Eventually, you will feel ready to actually leave the house for short periods ... then longer periods. I would not recommend starting cold turkey, but through a gradual increase as situations arise. This is good for your peace of mind and for your child's confidence and self-esteem as well.
