A guide to computer role-playing game sub-genres

Loot : To take treasure from a defeated enemy.

Mana: Used to fuel spells / abilities. While not all game are magic based, most RPGs employ abilities that require energy to power.
MMORPG: Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. A game in which many players, sometimes in the thousands, can all interact with each other in the same game world.

NPC : Non-player character. Any character controlled by the computer is an NPC.

Party: A grouping of characters who travel together and help each other on adventures. In single player games the party generally consists of the characters whose actions can be controlled by the player. In a multi-player game the party usually consists of multiple players who work together.

Quest: Story driven quests the player completes to progress in the game. Completing quests offer rewards, money and abilities.

WRPG: Western role-playing game. WRPG are typically less linear than JRPGs, they also tend to lean towards a heavy basis on rules and a focus on character customization. WRPGs tend towards darker and more mature storylines with less humor than JRPGs.

These are some of the most widely encountered Vime, the video game language, words used throughout most RPG sub-categories. While the specifics change depending on the game, all RPGs generally share very similar characteristics. Multi-player and online RPGs, particularly MMORPGs, generally have their own, much larger, Vime vocabulary. Other Vime guides will have to address the particulars of the other RPG sub-categories.
