Poetry: A girl I know

She fails at almost everything she tries
She uses a smile to avoid the pain
She hides herself behind intricate lies
And lets the world believe she's sane

She keeps herself in a dark, quiet space
She doesn't let anyone get too close
She someday wants to wear pearls and lace
But feels unworthy of any of those

Be careful when you let her out
She's fragile, weak, and slowly dying
She'll laugh, sing, dance, and shout
But remember that she's always lying

She searches for answers in all the wrong places
On men and booze she has a strong hold
She eventually realizes that in these cases
The bottle's always empty, the bed always cold

She fears the light of the next day
When her mistakes are all a blur
She knows later she will pay
Still there won't be a cure

It's a cycle she calls life
One she wishes was for sale
In her hand she holds a knife
But she's too afraid she will fail

I know this girl all too well
I see her everyday
She smiles and thinks I can't tell
She's slowly slipping away

The mirror doesn't lie
It won't sugar coat what's true
I see her staring back and cry
It's hard to face the real you.
