Novel Excerpts

Novel excerpts: Growing up

Her hair was long for a woman her age. She wore it down with combs holding it away from her face. The color was soft beige- not daring enough to be called blonde and not strong enough to be considered brunette. Her eyes were a cold blue and she had a large smile that fully exposed her gums and teeth, which were rather crooked in spots. Upon knowing her better I got the feeling she never had them corrected on purpose, as she certainly had the money, but rather viewed it as some sort of badge of honor indicating how far she had risen from her low beginnings. She had a countenance that could turn at the drop of a hat. Her voice, facial expressions and mannerisms all could transform entirely if provoked. Her dress was simple, yet meant to imply her status in life. A long, crisp, white button down shirt with khaki pants; her accessories were a cliche Louis Vuitton handbag, a ring with a large diamond, and a gold chain around her neck, as well as the aforementioned combs in her hair which were adorned with crystal butterflies. Her toenails peeped out from her white orthopedic looking sandals, and were painted a bright cherry red. All of this combined cannot describe the air about this woman; it was her attitude that sent chills up the spine.

By looking at her brightly colored handbag, her penchant for butterfly-encrusted nick-knacks and toothy smile one might never guess at first that this was a ruthless woman. I thought in the beginning that I might die under that withering stare if it should ever be directed at me, or if I should ever come to the point of challenging her cultured sense of entitlement. The irony of it all was that her greatest point of pride was the difficult times she had been through in her lifetime, but those around her going through the same difficulties were utterly revolting to her. Less than a decade ago she worked at a bakery to support herself while her husband did time for fraud in his business dealings, and now she carries herself like an empress, expecting her approval to be treasured at every bestowal and her reproof to result in self-loathing in each recipient, and believe me, there are many.

When questioned, she is abusive. When complimented, she is modest. When discussing others, she makes gossip sound cultured and persuades the less-discerning that her injury was so great that it merits the conversation which would otherwise be beneath her. She has opinions about everyone and everything, whether she knows the situations
