Best romance novels. I cannot think of a better topic for me to write about. I am an avid reader of romance novels and review them for a few different websites. I have read the best of the best and the worst of the worst. Choosing "one" book to call the best, for me would be next to impossible, so I will instead list a few of the ones that I love the most, with a brief synopsis of each. I will also give the book a "smut" rating of 1-5, one being sex only behind closed doors to five, which means the pages caught fire.
1. Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie- Bet Me is about a misunderstanding involving Min Dobbs and Cal Morrissey who are inadvertently thrown together when she overhears him making a bet with her ex-boyfriend about how long it will take Cal to get her in to bed. David, her ex, thinks Min is frigid and doesn't like sex. Ummmm...nope. Min just didn't want to sleep with David. This is a wonderful story about accepting people for who they are and not what the world expects them to be. It's fun, romantic, and sexy! Smut rating- 3
2. Dream a Little Dream by Susan Elizabeth Phillips- Part of SEPs Chicago Stars series, this book is about Gabe and Rachel, two people who have recently had devastating events happen in their lives that have basically turned them, especially Gabe, in to angry and bitter people. I loved watching them very slowly melt each other's icy exteriors and fall in love. Smut rating- 4.5
3. Voyager- This is the third book in Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. Clair has inadvertently traveled back in time 200 years and fallen in love with a Scottish highlander. In Voyager, Claire and Jamie have reunited after a very, very long separation. This book is close to 1,000 pages and I read it in two days. It's simply amazing and I think Gabaldon is destined to be the Austen or Bronte of the 21st Century. Smut rating- 5
4. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen- Elizabeth Bennett and Fitzwilliam Darcy fight first impressions and fall in love. What else can I say? This book is a masterpiece and Jane Austen is a genius. I would love to see what types of stories she would write if she were alive today. Smut rating- 0
5. Four to Score by Janet Evanovich- The fourth in the Stephanie Plum series, Joe and Stephanie finally "do the deed" and I was loving every second of it, short as it was. Some would dispute my claim that any of the Plum books are romance novels. In this book, though, much of the focus was on Joe and Stephanie finally having sex, and of course they end up having a 10 book relationship to date, so in my opinion, they are romance novels with a multitude of other goings on. Smut rating- 2.5 only because it was the only scene, but a darn hot 2.5.
I have listed five of my favorite romance novels and If I didn't have to go to bed, I would be able to list at least 20 more. The romance genre is very misunderstood and underrated, and I welcome any opportunity to allow people to see what fun these stories can be.
