With notable trend setters such as Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and Jack Osborne
enlisting the aid of professional therapy it is easy to see why it may be becoming
a fad.
Newstands hollered the headlines that Donald Trump was giving former Miss America,
Tara Conner a second chance as long as she went in treatment to overcome her
addictions.
More and more well known personalities are giving their thumbs up to therapy by
relating their own personal success stories. Robert Downey Jr. often shares his
experience in overcoming drugs on night shows. Robin Williams recently admitted his
need for help in overcoming alcohol.
Tracey Gold (Growing Pain's co-star) had her struggle with aneroxia nervosa made
into a movie. Winona Ryder makes no bones about keeping her nervous breakdown
a secret. Actress Ann Heche had a very public psychotic break and recovered
fully.
Newscasts and talk shows also focus on the down side of not receiving treatment when
you really should by using references to top stars. How many times has it been
said, If only Anna Nicole Smith had received the proper treatment that she might
still be alive today. Chris Farley and John Belushi are still brought to mind
along with the question 'if?'
More positive than negative will be accomplished with the stars sharing their
experiences. This just may be the answer to the removal of the stigma so long
attached to seeking professional help.
