SEVEN SECRET STRATEGIES FOR SPELLING

Because I have worked as both a teacher and an editor, spelling is a major priority for me and my children.

My kids and I have tried to develop creative and even entertaining ways to practice before spelling tests. Here is a list of seven fun ways to learn spelling words.

1. We create crosswords and word-search puzzles to employ the required words. (The Discovery Channel has a Puzzlemaker site that makes this quite simple.)

2. We play hangman to spell out the words.

3. We play charades, but the guessers have to spell the words instead of saying them.

4. We make up silly rhyming sentences, using the listed spelling words.

5. We have spelling bees with classmates after school. (Sometimes we even have lollipops or small candies for prizes.

6. We practice spelling out loud, especially in the car.

7. We make flashcards with the words.
