I know is leprechauns came out of their homes at a time in Ireland's history when her treasures were being pillaged and money, coins and gold were buried and hidden by folks, the wealthy and the poor, with the hopes that in safer times they could return to claim it. The buried money enriched Ireland's soil and allowed her to be fertile and support her people.
Leprechauns became the species of fairie who protect that gold, to keep Ireland vital and fertile and thriving, a notion dear to the people of Ireland who suffered through the great famine. They take this business seriously so when anyone approaches them with the hopes of finding the pot of gold the leprechaun can seem to be quite unpleasant. Of course, if you are Irish and he can tell if you are, and in your heart only want to see the leprechaun and perhaps share a quick stout or two, he can be a charmer. Beware though, he will spike your drink so that you forget, first where you saw him, then what you talked about and soon the entire event so that it becomes nothing more than a dream.
If by some chance of four leaf clover luck you meet a friendly leprechaun and he winks at you, dances a bit, perhaps has a smoke by pipe or hand rolled cigarette, know that you have been blessed and you will find a monetary reward sometime right after the encounter.
You see the leprechauns are protecting Ireland's rich heritage AND in a pinch they don't mind sharing some of it with you every now and then. At least this is the story I heard from my father's mother, my grandma Helen, born in Cork County, Ireland.
So there you go, leprechauns, like Santa, are more than their image, more than their stories. They are energy, an energy that begins in truth, moves to fantasy, and becomes real again as it touches, moves and inspires people in amazing ways.
