The case against fur and leather clothing

by Kimmy

I want to take you all into a gruesome scene. Please, use your imagination and come along with me for the ride:

The sun has just risen and you have awaken in an unknown place. Although you are confused, you are oddly comforted by the warmth of the sun, the cool breeze, and the company of your fellow barn yard friends. The flawless grass leads you to rows and rows of plants reaching up to the sky. Just when all seems perfect, a grumpy, angry, hygiene challenged man whisks you away from the paradise you barely knew. You are thrown into a dark room, shoved through a little window, and tossed into a bath. The water tastes disgusting and you are welcomed by many other disgusting men who shove you down into the bath. After you have been cleaned, they throw you onto the ground, where you await your grim fate. Without warning a machine clamps around your hind legs and lifts you up so you can't touch the ground any longer. The blood starts to run to your head and everything is thrown out of proportion. You look over and see the terrified faces of the friends you once knew. As the machine turns you see rows and rows of dirty, blood-covered men holding knives and hoses. You try with all of your might and even the strength you never knew you had to try and release yourself from the machine's death grip, but it is too late. The wheels turn and as you near the first worker, he grips you around the neck, lifts your head, and out go the lights...

For centuries this has been the process in which man has gone through to create a simple product. People took clothes for granted even before fur coats came about, and now we shell out 400 dollars for the latest fashions, not even thinking once what it truly costed. To think that we once respected animals and all they could bring us. Now more than half are being killed for a coat that will last half of the life they could have lived. The way I see it, in twenty years or so, when your child asks you for a bunny, what they will really mean is a fur coat made from a rabbit.

All I ask is that if and when you purchase that fancy new leather or fur coat, you know what pain an animal went through. In most cases, the animals are still alive while being skinned. Just imagine, having your skin ripped from the flesh under it while you watch! An act that tribes perform is now an everyday task for "civilized" people... Yet another way to show that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
