Reflections: What would you do with a million pounds?

by Stephen Culley

Created on: May 22, 2007

I would probably put it into the stock market. I currently make enough money to make ends meet and I would rather use the money later in life so I could entertain the possibility of retiring early.

Given the crash of the sub-prime market in America, I wouldn't mind putting investment into property with lower house prices. I always fancied the idea of being a property developer and now seems like a great time to follow that.

I think that one of the most lucrative things to do with your money is to just stick it in the bank and let it gain interest. You could probably live off your interest every year.

I'd probably take about 50,000 and use that to pay for some essentials. My driving lessons, my driving test. a small car for after I qualify. I'd finance an Open University degree for me and for my father. To pay for my sister's college fees for next year.

I wouldn't go crazy and blow it all on extravagant possessions. It's all about being sensible and playing a financially smart game. I'm only 19 and a million pounds isn't something I can retire off at the moment. And, I'd honestly rather work to keep myself occupied and out of the house than sit at home just because I could afford to.

I'd like to travel at some point. I'd take a holiday to go and see my extended family in Australia at some time in the near future. I would also love to go to Niagara Falls to see my very best friend (and the Falls too at some point, of course!).

I would also set up a couple of standing orders to charities and give some money to help children avoid some of the perils that this world can bring.

The main thing I would do is just to remember that if you throw money around, it can attract interest from 'less-than-reputable' characters. Money isn't everything in this world and those that don't have it tend to forget that.
