In today's society, it is nearly impossible to raise a child without the influence of television. Even parents who do not allow their children to watch television at home will find that their children are subjected to television when they visit family or friends, go to school, or even just enter a store. Televisions are everywhere these days, and there is little that can be done to prevent exposure.
Rather than raising children without television, parents should focus more on teaching them how to handle the information that they gather from television. They should also stress discretion with what is watched. Parents should help teach their children to make responsible choices about how much television is watched, what is watched, and when it is watched.
Children should not be glued to a television rather than playing. They need to remain active to help fight the rising rate of childhood obesity. It is also important not use the television as a babysitter, expecting to keep children out of trouble by placing them in front of the television for hours on end.
Caution should be used when choosing what a child can or cannot be watching. Parents usually don't want their children watching violent television shows or movies, but have no problem with their children watching the news. Sadly, the news is often filled with a lot of the same violence you will find in many movies. Rather than completely prohibiting the exposure, parents should teach their children to talk about what they see, rather than acting it out.
Television can be a great educational tool when properly used. There are many wonderful educational programs available for children of all ages, and these can be a valuable addition to the steps you are already taking in helping teach your children. However, they do not take the place of personal instruction, and should only be used in addition other educational processes.
Parents should not completely give up on television, but should instead emphasize viewing television in a responsible manner.
