Tips for surviving a cross-country road trip with your sanity intact

HAPPY TRAILS WITH RV TRAVELS

With retirement right around the corner you might be trying to think of what to do with all your newfound freedom and time. If you have ever traveled in an RV (recreational vehicle) in the past, you know what fun they can be. If you love traveling and seeing the country, an RV just might be the best mode of transportation.

Consider this: if you fly, you need a car when you get to your destination. You are also at the mercy of the airlines and will need accommodations. You go to only that one destination and never get to see the country that's in-between. And, you can only pack what you can carry.

RV travel, on the other hand, is like being in a home away from home. Like the proverbial turtle, you carry your house on your back. You're at home wherever you are and there's no need to search for a hotel in the middle of the night after a long days drive.

If you and/or your partner are uncertain if RV'ing is for you, try a test drive. If you have a friend that has an RV, ask if you could drive it. Get a feel for it and see if this would even be something you would enjoy driving. Also, ask your friend for their input, tips and suggestions. They have one, so they must have used it and know the ins and outs, ups and downs of owning this type of vehicle. Ask them what they think of RV travel.

You may not know anyone who has an RV, so you may need to check into renting one for your first trip. Shop around for the best deal and don't forget to read the fine print. Pick a destination and don't forget to find an empty parking lot to get a "feel" for this larger vehicle prior to hitting the open road. Both you and your partner need to practice driving, as you will probably want to spell each other on long trips. Also, be sure to read everything the rental agent gave you, so you know how to maintain the vehicle. The better acquainted you are with the RV the less frustration you will have later if something unforeseen happens.

Plan your route in advance and try to book RV parks/campgrounds in advance, as they tend to fill up quickly, especially if they are near well-known sites of interest. Let loved ones know your itinerary. Also, it's a great idea to take a cell phone with you. This way you can keep family and friends informed of your progress, and in case of emergency it will also come in very handy. Good maps, phone numbers of campgrounds and a well laid out plan will assure a better trip.

If you have a lap top computer,
