Reflections on the saying "keep your friends close and your enemies closer"

The world is our mirror. What ever we see in others says something about who we are. That which makes an impression- whether positive or negative- is really a commentary on where we are holding inside.
While we naturally draw friends close because of the joy that they bring or the good that we see, there is an innate urge to push our enemies away. After all, if someone is your enemy, then the mere thought of him conjures up all sorts of distressful thoughts and feelings. But the truth is, that we are simultaneously pushing away the unpleasant parts of ourselves that the enemy is reflecting. The only difference is that while our external enemy can indeed be physically pushed away- or at least held at a distance- that which we hold inside, we can never run away from.
To bring an enemy close, means also to reconcile ourselves internally. We are making the statement that we are not afraid of what is inside, that we want to learn and grow from it, to turn it into something positive. And more often than not, our biggest enemies can end up being our greatest friends.
