Parent's introduction to understanding the video game language

set in either a fantasy or science-fiction universe, but exceptions to this abound. There are many sub-categories in the RPG genre.

5. Simulation: The focus in a simulation game is obvious: the game is designed to feel as close as is possible the real thing that is being simulated. The basic types of these games are flight simulators, military simulators, Space-combat simulators, and other vehicle simulators. One major sub-genre that should be mentioned is the god game' simulator games. In the god-game simulators the player is usually looking down on the game environment (city, world, space, etc) from the heavens. In these games the player usually has complete control over his world. The worlds of these games are varied, such being the mayor of SimCity, to the Populous with its RPG-elements.

6. Sports: Simply put, these are games where you play either individuals on a team, or the team itself. There are sport games for almost every major type of sport in the world. The sport genre is one of the most likely genres for a casual gamer to play.

7. Strategy: These games focus on building cities, managing resources, and skillful planning to achieve victory. These games types may be either real-time or turn-based, and some have a combination of the two. While many of these games feature strategic combat as a key element, there is a minority of strategy games that do not involve combat at all and have other ways to win. Sub-categories include: the strategy wargame or the tactical (tactics) game, each of these can further be broken down into real-time or turn-based.

These are the major gaming genres. There are other minor ones, such as education, adult, music, and many others, but these minor genres often incorporate elements from the major genres in with their gameplay. Some games, the Zelda series for example, are typically hard to classify as they utilize so many elements from many major genres.
