Farewell Gilmore Girls and Stars Hollow

As of May 15, 2007, television bids farewell to yet another landmark series, "The Gilmore Girls".

Fans everywhere will mourn the loss of the trendy banter, especially between Lorelei and daughter Rory, as well as the quirky characters that made up the fictional Connecticut town, Stars Hollow.

Do we know why the series had such a wide appeal? What appeared to have started out as a "chick" show, garnered numerous male fans as well as fans in all generations. Perhaps the eclectic mix of characters can attribute to some of the series popularity but for this viewer, Gilmore Girls provided a little escape from the realities of life.

Sure, there were serious themes addressed including the entire premise of sixteen year old Lorelei, pregnant, running scared from her controlling society parents and raising a daughter on her own. Family dynamics between Richard & Emily Gilmore and their daughter, Lorelei, provided the realistic tension found in so many families. But somehow, through all their trials and tribulations, the Gilmore Girls always offered the viewer a positive spin on even the most dire of situations.

It was with trepidation that I watched the final episode. Would the series end in such a way that I could be settled knowing that the weekly series would no longer be a part of my personal schedule? Could I be satisfied with the way things would end?

Although I can honestly say I'd love to see more seasons of the show, the series did itself proud in coming full circle in this final episode. Although Rory will be going off to begin her future as a journalist and the dreaded day when mother and daughter's lives will truly be more separate than ever before, we see that this is the necessary outcome of all that was presented in the very first episode of the show. Lorelei has raised her daughter and Rory will begin to follow her dream career. Richard and Emily attended the party and said their goodbyes. The town was there for one last peek into the way they have embraced Lorelei and Rory.
We all knew Luke and Lorelei belonged together and I give kudos to the writers for satisfying probably the single most sought after conclusion for this excellent series.

It is because of the great writing, the lovable and believable characters and the magic of belonging to Stars Hollow that we can let the Gilmore Girls move on. For those of us who were fans, we will never forget them (and we can re-live all of their memories on DVD for years to come) but we are satisfied.

Farewell Gilmore Girls and Stars Hollow. You will be missed.
