Diversity in the workplace: Its meaning

Diversity in the workplace used to mean the mixing of racial heritages by an employer. After some time, gender became included in the definition, and now it has a more generalized meaning. As minority groups of all types have been identified, they have sought inclusion under diversity guidelines.

As individuals, the meaning of diversity may have significant effects relative to who you sit next to in the office. There are advantages, and disadvantages to those in the workplace today. By working along with a diverse group of people, we learn about each others cultures, and befriend people that we might not otherwise. This is good because it helps to eliminate stereotypes.

Some offices, and merchants who have a very "exclusive clientele" may have to become accustomed to resistance from those who are elitists. Some businesses are traditionally white Caucasian male, or female oriented places that are now having to present a new face to their customers. Some people resist change, and are bigoted. The negative impact on business is probably minimal, but perceived as a major thing by some people who have a particular mind-set.

At a personal level, I welcome diversity because the interchange of cultures, and ideas enriches all involved. It should not need to be mandated by government, morally it is correct for the best qualified to be equally considered for any job. By working together we become more understanding of other cultures, family values, religions, and enjoy the chance to see the world through someone else's eyes. What a wonderful opportunity to learn while cultivating rich, new friendships!
