This allows the second coat of paint to properly adhere and mistakes to be rectified. Once again remove painter's tape before paint has completely dried. Note: Spray paint should not drip. If dripping occurs, wipe or sand the drips from the surface, shake your can well, and apply lighter coats of paint.

Old newspapers are effective protection from either spray paint splatter or paint drips. Fabric and plastic drop cloths are available from most paint stores. Plastic drop cloths are for one time use only.

9. Polyurethane newly painted furniture. Polyurethane comes in different finishes. If your polyurethane product requires fine sanding before application, the polyurethane will provide the finish you are seeking. Do not worry; your paint job will not be ruined. This step is often skipped in the painting process, but it is crucial to prevent water damage to your newly painted furniture. Polyurethane seals the painted furniture and protects it from damage. Use a good brush and plan on applying at least 2 coats to finish your project.

10. If your furniture is for outdoor use, purchase exterior primer, paint and polyurethane. Interior paint is not intended for outdoor use.

Enjoy your new piece of furniture. A new coat of paint and a little effort will bring out hidden style in old furniture, creating something altogether new and dramatic.
