If you want to sing and dance out your joys and sorrows, your problems and fears, take a ride with the Rogers and Hammerstein's 1965 musical, "The Sound of Music", for indeed,
"The hills are alive with the sound of music".
Maria, (Julie Andrews), the main singer and dancer, is a "problematic" novice nun who tumbles into the role of governess for 7 upper class children in a fortress-like mansion commandeered by their father, Herr Vonn Trapp (Rex Harrison).
Charming her way through the idiosyncracies of the multi-aged children, with songs like "My Favourite Things" and "Do-Re-Me", Maria finally dances into the heart of the stiff upper lipped father. Nothing is a real problem. It is all good-hearted fun.
"How do you solve a problem like Maria?
How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?" bewail the nuns. But they smile and wink and seem so "un" prim and proper to make them quite lovable.
In fact, all the characters are delightfully lovable in their own way. Except, perhaps, the German tribe of saboteurs who endeavour to sign up Herr Vonn Trapp into their war army. But a little "Edelweiss" helps the intrepid family (Maria is Mrs Von Trapp by this time) escape.
Yes! It all sounds a little sickly sweet, even for a musical. Believe it or not, the mobile, quirky faces of the nuns save the movie! They are hilarious! A trip around the nun's cemetery adds a little drama to the movie and that flashing light! Watch out for the flashing light! It is quite heart pounding!
And for those who love to weep a sentimental tear or two, you can't beat the dance of Rolf and Liesl, in the rain, in the soft lights of a pergola! Just soooooo romantic! Sighhhhhhhhh
This movie is a taste of that "unreality" we all like occasionally, often, regularly.
Some claim to have seen this movie 10 times!
Any improvements on 10?
