Renewable sources of energy like wind, water, solar energy and biomass energy are sustainable, renewable and re-usable and can be used again and again without getting depleted. One of the major benefits of using these renewable sources of energy is that they are environmentally clean. They protect the environment in the following ways:
They are not associated with emission of green house gases like carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide , methane, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) etc which are normally produced by petroleum based vehicles.
Increased production of green house gases results in increased absorption of the infrared radiations produced by the sun, thereby causing the warming of earth's surface and atmosphere resulting in global warming and climate changes (hurricanes etc).
Renewable sources of energy are also associated with reduced emission of environment polluting gases: Vehicles running on renewable sources of energy would also be associated with reduced emission of environment polluting gases like carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, un-burnt hydrocarbon particles etc. Renewable sources of energy are also associated with reduced emission of gases like oxides of nitrogen, non-methane organic compounds etc, which could be responsible for depletion of atmospheric ozone. Depletion of ozone layer is responsible for causing the harmful ultra-violet rays of the sun to reach the earth's surface. This may be further responsible for producing changes in the climate and causing harmful effects to organic life (increased incidence of skin cancer, melanomas etc).
Protection of ecosystems and soil: Use of renewable sources of energy like biomass (ethanol derived from agricultural products like corn) would lead to substantial increase in land which would be occupied by grain crops. This would help in saving ecosystems and soils by protecting them against land and soil pollution
Improvement in quality of water: Transportation of petroleum is often associated with production of oil spills which can prove detrimental to aquatic life and pollute water. Increased use of renewable sources of energy would be helpful in decreasing the requirement for petrol which would help in reducing oil spills in future
