How to be an animal liberation activist without being vegan

To answer this question correctly I believe one must forget the common definition of an Animal Liberation Activist, and first and foremost consider the real motive of an activist: to help ensure animals do not suffer at the hands of humans.

Animal Liberation Activists aren't concerned with labels - they are concerned about the welfare of animals. Any debate over the term 'Animal Liberation Activist' and 'Vegan' does, to my mind, skirt around the edges of the real question: can you be a non-vegan and still be concerned about the welfare of animals?

The answer is 'yes'.

There are many ways in which a 'yes' answer can be qualified, but the best demonstration of it is in the opening scene in the movie 'Last of the Mohicans'. In this scene, the primary characters hunt and kill a deer for food. The deer is killed instantly with a clean shot and without suffering. Upon its death, the main characters pay their respects to the deer for giving its life up so that they may live. The scene exemplifies the point that you can love and care for animals whilst, at the same time be forced to eat them for survival.

Those who are concerned with animal welfare are, on the whole, keen to see an end to animal suffering. Just because you aren't a vegan, doesn't mean you don't share the same goal.
