time to be kids. If they sit more or less 6 hours at school, not to mention time in a car or on a bus, then are expected to sit for too much more time at home, they will start having problems at school and at home. "PE" is not enough time for kids to blow off steam (besides the stress factor of that for some kids) and kids need some 'unstructured', just hanging out, doin' what I want, kind of time to bond with friends and family, and enjoy themselves.
I'm sure some could come up with more reasons why children are hurt by too much homework, but this is enough to start. Parents/guardians, you are responsible for your child. Don't put up with things that harm your child just because it's expected of you. Don't yell at the teacher, they are overwhelmed too. Just discuss the issues and how they can be resolved with whoever you have to until they get resolved to your satisfaction. Believe me, your child is watching, and they will appreciate that you tried to stand up for them even if the issue isn't totally resolved. Kids can feel their parents let them down when they allow a situation to continue that causes them undue stress and anxiety.
So, assess the situation, decide if you should intervene, then make an appointment with your child's teacher. That is the first step in trying to change an unhealthy situation for your child. Then get involved with the politics of 'testing' and let your voice be heard by the politicians (not educators) who are passing the laws that are honestly meant to improve education, but often have the opposite effect. Get involved in your child's school and your child's class, and become an advocate for your child today.
