Reasons people oppose gay marriage

People oppose the term "Gay Marriage" more than they actually oppose the idea of two gay people living together and raising a family. It is the fear that making something legal will soon make it the norm. This idea terrifies anyone who is either religious, or extremely straight. The fact of the matter is there are people who like people of the same sex. They love them for whatever reasons they have, they enjoy having sex with them, want to live together and have the dream life everyone imagines when they are children.

Whether or not people are born gay or become gay, it doesn't matter. What matters is that they are human just like the rest of us. They can reproduce offspring, even if it is not with their partner. They can love and be loved, just like a straight person. They can buy a house, own a car, work a job, and shop at the same stores, they are normal. Just because someone has a different sexual preference does not make them ineligible for the institute of marriage.

There are no real reasons to oppose it. Fear and disgust are the only two main reasons for people to object to gay marriage. The opposition to gay marriage almost makes it sound like "If we ignore them they will go away." That is not the case, nor will it ever be. There have been people who prefer the same sex all throughout history, male and female alike. Gay people are not going to go away. People are not going to stop being gay just because it makes some people uncomfortable.

With divorce rates between straight people as high as they are, why is the institute of marriage so heavily guarded? Some say the reason marriage is only between a man and a woman is to have children. What about all the straight couples who are infertile? Should they not be allowed to marry? "Of course they should" people say, "because they are a man and a woman." But there is no difference between an infertile couple and a gay couple adopting children.

There is also the issue of sexual compatibility only being between a man and a woman. Well, I hate to burst people's imaginary bubble, but straight people do basically all the same acts that gay people do, minus the oral sex between the same sex partners. Not to mention all the bisexual couples out there who are married and invite same sex partners in for three ways. If we are talking sexual preferences, what about all the crazy sexual practices straight people have? There are too many to list and many are way more perverse than anything gay couples would dream of doing!

In short the only reasons people have for opposing it is fear. Fear of something different. Fear that their child might be gay. Fear that they might be gay themselves. Fear that has no basis, no logical reason, and is ultimately blind to a whole group of citizens who should have the same rights to happiness as straight people.
