Tips for faster and deeper learning

Tips for successful and effective learning are plenty. What works for one person may not for the next. It is imperative that learners understand how they function in different settings. Proficiency levels may fluctuate from one task to the next. This could be due to the repetitive nature of doing something on a regular basis, and the lack of repetition in another facet. Not to worry. When it comes to learning, you are in the driver seat. You call the shots, and you make it all happen. But first, you must understand how to use your learning style to adjust and accommodate yourself with the results you are expecting.

1. Set Goals - When you first scope out the assignment, do you notice anything off the cuff that jumps at you; take advantage of that. If it is something you are well-versed in, start taking notes. If it is something that has you believing you will soon start pulling your hair, then take that concern and turn it around to make it a positive one. Instead of worrying, be sure you write all the thoughts that come to mind about that item - it does not have to make sense - just yet - but it will help you when it is time to work on your assignment.

2. Plan your schedule - sounds easy, but many people forget to do this or neglect this idea, because they feel they've got it together; as in, I know what I am doing because I know myself. True - to a point. Keep in mind that when you plan to learn, the goal is to focus the planning efforts on studying the best way possible where you can retain the information and able to concentrate.

3. Believe in your abilities - Do no despair. Yes, this is easier said than done, but just think that for every effort you exert, you are learning something, and this 'thing' may not necessarily be relevant to the assignment or learning experience; it could be something that you realize you do not want to do in the future, and have thus made a mental note of it.

4. Conceptualize your thoughts - use diagrams and key words, and connect the missing links. Concept maps or mind maps are an excellent tool when it comes to learning. Who said learning had to be about writing pages upon pages all of the time? Get Creative; the possibilities are endless

5. Relax - the more flustered you become, the harder it is to concentrate and put to paper what you want. Clear you mind, and take your time. Rushing through things can lead to incomplete thoughts that may be worth their value in Gold.
