Anyone with a television, a computer, an ipod, or any other "media gadget" that technology has given us over last few years can plainly see the music scene today has more overrated so called "talent" than it does musicians with actual "musical". The list of artists and reasons causing this great musical tragedy is too long for anyone to try and tackle. However it is my unprofessional opinion that the blame for this era of terrible tunes can be placed on not one particular artist, but the genre that collects them all. When it comes to the subject of overrated musicians no other genre of music has produced more over the past decade than the genre commonly refereed to as pop music. Pop music is the cause of the overrated terrible quality that has become modern music.
It started with the boy bands, then the overflow of females with more sex appeal than musical talent, to eventually lead us to where we are now, which is a mixture of the previous two eras with a few new ingredients to give you a slightly different dish that leaves the same bad taste in your mouth after it's over. Pop music is more or less the celebration of two "Hollywood Metaphors" that typically go hand and hand, known as the "fifteen minutes of fame" and the "one hit wonder." Most pop stars don't even receive the full length of their fifteen minutes as their video reaches number six on TRL and then vanishes making their song (well, the song they were given to preform)more of a love tap than an actual hit in terms of impact on the billboard charts and music industry as a whole. The performer then vanishes back to wherever they previously existed to become just another pretty face you pass in the mall, or the next pretty face on the cover of the sex tape you purchase on-line. The song that made them famous for half of a half hour is then thrown in the recycling bin, only to be replayed for the purposes of making a joke or filming some VH1 Pop Culture analyst program.
Kurt Cobain once stated something in an interview about pop music that truly illustrated just how overrated and worthless pop music is to the gift of music. He said something to the effect of "Pop music only has two stars that are considered "legends" or icons; Michael Jackson and Madonna. The rest of them just seem to disappear." Mr. Cobain presents a valid point that a decade after his passing still holds true, and the pop scene these days has only gotten worse. I'm sure Kurt is turning over in his grave somewhere as these sappy, over
