Over the Hedge is a movie I've recommended to my nieces and nephews (children under six) as well as my eighty-year-old grandmother. Most everyone enjoys this wonderful animation.
The basic premise of the movie is like many others in the children's genre, there is complexity though. Rather than a simple and straight forward- there's trouble, and we must get out of it with our perseverance. The plot of the movie follows the tale (tail?) of RJ, a wayward raccoon and one mistake he has made that will forever impact his life, as well as the lives of many other animals.
This may seem a simplistic tale for the children, which will keep them entertained with the lively and unique characters, but the movie is almost more entertaining for the adult viewers. There are multiple issues addressed in the film, from the problem of suburbanization of nature, to the excessive eating/weight problem in America. Aside from the serious issues (which are addressed appropriately humorous manner) the actors portraying the voice roles of the characters lend a uniqueness to the experience.
William Shatner and Avril Lavigne play a pair of possums, and two of the most memorable characters. Avril Lavigne's signature punk attitude and style show through in her character. And Shatner's mark, famous from the Original Star Trek Series, as an overly dramatic, long-death-scene man, really makes the film entertaining for the folks old enough to get the references.
Overall, I'd consider the film to be a cross between Super Size Me, Finding Nemo, and Fern Gulley. It's the perfect film for every age, and a time capsule for the turn of the century.
As an additional note, the animation is well mastered, and well-done.
