Religion is based upon faith - faith that the God and the doctrine of your religion is the truth. To give any form of credence to one religion when you believe in another, is to deny your faith, and thus your own religion. If you believe in one, you must not believe in the other. Thus, any religious person on the face of the planet is, in effect, an atheist towards all other religious viewpoints.
The outright atheist is a little different. The self confessed atheist is one who believes that all the religions are categorically untrue, that there is no proof that God exists, nor is there any proof that a higher intelligence exists. A true atheist is closed off to the possibility of anything beyond this life now. Sometimes atheists will argue that all the religions are wrong and that they are open to possibility. In this instance the use of the term 'atheist' is incorrect. Agnostics believes in possibility, Atheists believe in no possibility.
The case against atheism is often made into a difficult one, as evidenced by many long winded debates. To convince an atheist that God does exist requires proof of God, or proof of a higher intelligence and its involvement in the creation of all things. Some people have experiences that they firmly believe prove all these things, but of course unless the atheist has the same experiences, they will not be convinced.
Yet, the notion of atheism, in its quest for proof, is its own contradiction. No atheist can prove where, ultimately, everything came from. No atheist can even prove where they themselves came from:
"From my parents," the Atheist says.
And where did they come from?
"From their parents," the Atheist replies smugly.
But the truth is, question for long enough, and the Atheist will eventually answer "I don't know, nobody does."
And right there is the case against Atheism. If an Atheist, who wants proof to be convinced, cannot be 100% sure about where everything came from, how can they, in the same breath, be 100% sure about where everything goes? It's like reading the middle page of a book and assuming with conviction you know exactly how the rest of the book starts and ends.
Along this logic one can see Atheism is, in the end, just another label for closed mindedness. If you want to reject the religions of the world and their Gods, that's fair - we are all entitled to our own believes. But in doing so, do not reject your openness to possibility, for without openness, how can you ever learn, and ultimately know, the truth?
