Mycology is the branch of botany that deals with the study of fungi, the types of classifications, their properties, the diseases they cause and their use to humans due to their medicinal properties. The word mycology is derived from the Greek word which means fungus. A person who specializes in the study of mycology is called a mycologist.

Mycology sprung out from the branch of botany and gave rise to the field of phytopathology, which focuses on the study of plant diseases. The Who's Who in the world of mycology includes Anton de Bary, Lewis David von Schweinitz, Christian Hendrik Persoon, Abraham Joffe and Elias Magnus Fries.
