Biography: John McEnroe

In addition to being one of the most talented tennis players ever to play the game, John McEnroe is also one of the most controversial athletes as well. McEnroe is not only known for his skill on the court but also for his loud mouth, bad temper, and turbulent marriage to Tatum O'Neil.

John Patrick McEnroe was born on February 16, 1959, in Wiesbaden, Germany. McEnroe was a military baby who's father was serving in the US Airforce. His family soon moved to Queens, NY, which is where John was raised.

McEnroe, in addition to being a brilliant tennis player at a young age, was also a very good all around athlete. He did eventually show the most promise in Tennis and attended The Port Washington Tennis Academy and The cove Racket Club.

In 1977 McEnroe became the youngest player in the Wimbledon finals and was voted Tennis Magazine's Rookie of the Year. Over the span of his career, he also had the distinction of becoming the youngest man to win the U.S. Open since 1948.

Over the years McEnroe gained a reputation for being a troublemaker. His angry outbursts on the court and his rivalry with Bjorn Borg are as memorable as the tournaments he played.

In 1986 McEnroe took a break from Tennis to marry actress Tatum O'Neil. They had four children and divorced in 1992. O'Neil, a former heroine addict, has recently penned a tell all book that does not portray John in a good light.

Since his departure from Tennis, McEnroe has become a sportscaster as well as begun an involvement in charity work involving the Arthur Ashe foundation as well as many children's charitable causes.

McEnroe had a short lived talk show a few years ago, owns an art gallery in NYC and plays guitar at charity events. He still has a reputation as a sports bad boy, but over the years, he has matured in to an upstanding celebrity member of society.
