Road rage appears in the newspapers and on television more and more these days, although not everyone has to be subjected to it, and with wise forethought you can avoid this kind of behavior being aimed at you.
Why road rage happens.
There are too many cars on the road these days. The affluence of society means that many families have more than one car. Human beings are fiercely independent and like to drive, although what this results in is excess traffic. The more cars there are on the road, the more tempers get frayed, and it is a modern day phenomenon that people are in a hurry to get from A to B, and have this conception that time matters more than diligent driving practice.
Awareness
One of the most important lessons that is taught when we learn to drive is awareness of those cars that are within a close proximity to our car. Mirrors are wonderful at keeping drivers informed of what is happening behind their vehicle. Using the rule "Mirror, Signal, Maneuver" that clearly defines how we act on the road with regard for other drivers helps enormously. It's a first rate rule, and what you are achieving when employing it is awareness of those cars behind you.
When people take actions that cause other vehicles to brake, tempers get frayed, and arguments are a distinct possibility. The old lady that drives down the road totally unaware of those vehicles around them is a first rate target for abuse from other drivers. Their lack of awareness lets them down.
Approaching junctions.
The same rule applies on reaching a junction. "Mirror, signal, maneuver". What this does is tell the car behind which way you are going. It also informs those cars on the main highway of your intention, and it is when drivers ignore other users of the road that tempers fly into top gear. For example, at a junction, misjudging the speed of other road users, a driver may pull out and in doing so make those cars on the main highway slow down and brake. Your actions speak volumes, and when a person is trying to get from A to B, having their road blocked by an inconsiderate driver can push the stress levels over the edge, causing road rage.
Throughout all road situations awareness of others will stop you from encountering rage from other drivers, since you will be doing nothing to provoke it.
Illegal entry to your vehicle.
For safety's sake, if you find yourself in a stationary position, be aware if someone tries to enter your car. Keep doors locked, have a telephone at the ready to report this kind
