Why bluffing is a vital part of playing card games

by SQ Ng

Bluffing is a skill used by many card players to increase their winning stakes in card games. It is important because luck can never be on your side every hand. If luck is on your side, no skillful players will bet big with you if you can't deceive them. To win big in card games, bluffing is vital whether you have a winning or losing hand.

A good bluff will increase your winning stakes of playing a hand. Bluffing can work both ways. When you make the other players think you have a strong hand when you actually have a weak hand also known as acting strong. Or, making them think you have a weak hand when you actually have a strong hand also known as acting weak.

When acting strong, you are making the other players believe that the next move they make will eventually be a losing one. You are encouraging them to fold, or cut their losses now. When successful, your attempt to steal a pot is rewarded in kind satisfaction.

When acting weak, you are down playing your hand to make the other players believe they have the stronger hand. This is to urge them to take advantage of you perceive weak stance. By playing it correctly, you can lure in more money into the pot and in the end increasing your winnings.

A good bluff requires a well thought out playing strategy. A strategy that allows you to tell a believable story with your playing style and body language from the moment you sit to the moment you leave the card table. The story reinforces your bluff. It makes your opponent believe that he is reading a weak hand from you when in fact you have a strong hand. In contrast, if your opponent believes you are portraying a strong hand, you can push in for a steal at the pot.

However, bluffs do not work all the time even if you force tell tale signs to your opponents. Players who are often inexperience will be tempted to call your clever bluff. You might want to bluff sometimes, but don't do it too often, only in the right situations and only to the right players. A good bluff can make win you big and a bad bluff can make you lose big.
