How to remove the smell of cat urine from a carpet

Mother Nature has designed cat urine so that it is long lasting and won't wash off even in the rain. The cat uses its urine as a territory marker and even when it dries and you think you have washed it off it comes back again as soon as it gets damp.

The reason for this is because when cat urine dries on the carpet it forms crystals and those crystals are the source of that nasty smell. The crystals cannot be broken down by ordinary cleaners and need a combination of chemicals to eradicate the smell completely.

A simple home remedy for getting rid of cat urine can be put together with a few basic ingredients from your cupboard.

Firstly you will have to take up as much of the urine as you can, using old cloths or kitchen towel. Then mix 3 parts of water to 1 of vinegar and use the mixture to really soak the spot. Make sure it is well saturated.

Blot up the carpet again and try and get as much out as you can so that it is dry. Next, sprinkle the patch with baking soda.

Then, mix cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide solution with a teaspoon of dishwasher detergent and distribute it over the baking soda. Do a test patch first to make sure that the peroxide doesn't mark the carpet.

Now work the mixture into the carpet with a stiff brush. (A nail brush is quite effective) When the patch is quite dry vacuum it thoroughly. If it still leaves a light smell afterwards, lather and rinse it well and then repeat the process.

You can buy some very good products that are confident about removing cat odors. A popular one is Just for Cats' by Natures Miracle. It is one of the cheapest on the market and works very well.

Another one to be recommended is called Urine-Off and uses specially formulated enzymes to chemically break down the cat crystals.

Another popular one is called Urine Gone and is also very effective. It even comes with an ultra violet light for you to locate the soiled area!

Finally the most important thing to remember is however you decide to clean your carpet it is vital that you do not use a household cleaner that contains ammonia. Cat urine also contains ammonia and if your cat detects even the slightest smell of this, it will be encouraged to re offend in the same area.
