Best highway car

There are a number of factors to consider when choosing a car that will be used primarily for highway driving. The choice you make, will, of course, be based on your own unique circumstances and preferences, but there are a few things that everyone should consider.

The price of gasoline is rising steadily, it is very important to take into account the gas mileage, or miles per gallon, of any car you are considering. This is especially important in a car that will be driven greater distances, such as in highway driving. The advantage of being able to drive further on a gallon of gas will benefit not only your pocketbook, but the environment as well. It is also important to have enough power available when you need it for passing or maneuvering out of trouble, so bear that in mind also. There may be a trade-off between power and mpg's, but there are many cars available that do a good job at both.

Driving a car that is comfortable is almost always desirable, for highway driving it is mandatory. Longer hours spent behind the wheel will be much more fatiguing in a car that has a rough ride and uncomfortable seating. A car with a softer suspension is preferable to say a 4x4 truck. Again, personal preference, and no doubt age, will play a large part in your choice here. A car that is noisy will also wear you down over time. Wind, road and engine noise all play a part in this. For long highway drives, quieter is definitely better.

It is easy to get bored on long drives. Boredom while driving is not something to take lightly, it can lead to sleepiness. Being sleepy is, of course, always dangerous when one is steering a moving projectile that weighs several thousand pounds. A good sound system can help in keeping you alert and even entertained.

There are a ton of electronic gadgets available for cars today, some are helpful, some are silly and some are potentially dangerous. Anything that distracts your attention from actually driving is probably not a good idea. I'll let you decide for yourself what those might be. One of the good items that has become available in recent years is GPS or Global Positioning System. GPS devices are available as standard or optional items from many car manufacturers, but if yours doesn't offer it they are available widely as an add-on device. GPS uses satellites to help you navigate. It will get you where you want to go, and it will do it accurately and easily, or in other words it will keep you from getting lost. For highway driving in areas you are not familiar with, it is invaluable.

A good way to really experience a car you are considering is to rent it. Narrow your choices down to a few models to reduce the expense of renting multiple cars. There is no better way to get the feeling of a car than to actually spend a day or two driving it. How is it on gas? Does it have enough power? Is the ride smooth and are the seats comfortable? Is it noisy or quiet? How's the sound system?

These considerations should help you to determine the best highway car for yourself. Good luck and good driving.
