My biggest fear on the road way, is getting a tire blowout. This is why I try to inspect my tires regularly and make sure that there is no wear, especially at the front end.
When your tire blows it is important to stay calm and grip your steering wheel firmly! Do not brake! Take your foot off of the gas pedal and just let your vehicle slow itself down.
If you need to change lanes, stay calm! Alert other motorists around you to your situation by simply using your blinkers or indicators; Once they see you slowing down, they will get the message and will yield to you.
When changing lanes, check your mirrors, look around you, making sure that there are no obstructions in your path.
Maneuver your vehicle off of the road way by steering as you decelerate. Once you have found a safe place to pull over, i.e a hard shoulder or an exit, then it is safe to apply your brakes a Little, making sure that all four wheels are completely off of the thoroughfare before you arrive at a complete stop.
If you experience a blowout where there is nowhere to pull over; Maneuver your vehicle to the slow lane and just drive patiently and slowly, until you can find a safe place to pull over. Use your hazard lights if need be. Stopping your vehicle anywhere on the highway will be extremely dangerous. The worst thing that could happen is that your tire will become more damaged than it already is.
Making sure that your tire pressures are accurate, will not only save you money on gas; But, under-inflated tires are one of the main causes of blowouts!
