VoIP(Voice over IP) calls are right now used to make calls from the PC to standard land line anywhere in the world. VoIP converts the analog voice signals (our speech) into digital signals/data which is then transmitted over the internet. This basically uses several gatekeepers in between the origin-destination.
Cellulars and VoIP:
1.The major issue is that most mobile phones are not designed to run CPU intensive applications such as VoIP software. So even if you had a fast enough mobile connection, getting the VoIP client to run well on a typical mobile phone, a J2ME handset for example, will be a challenge.
2. Most consumers prefer cheap handsets that provide basic telephony and text messaging features, and not much else. The cellular phones must be Wi-Fi enabled to be used for VoIP. This may not be economical so the potential users mays be very less, so it is the main concern why many companies are not in this direction.
Right now as of today this is the news:
"Several big names in the communications sector, including Microsoft, Nokia, and Skype, announced mobile phone-based VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) products and services that could radically change how cellular customers use their handsets in the future." Quoted on Reuters.
Lets all wait:)
