The Invisible, released in 2007, comes with a very intriguing tag line. The preview begs the question, "How do you solve a murder, when its your own?" The premise of the film, starring Justin Chatwin and Margarita Levieva, revolves around the question of life after death.
Nick Powell (Chatwin) is your typical golden boy. He excels at academics, is a gifted writer, charms all the ladies, and has always had everything handed to him in life. He despises his emotionally distant mother; thinking her selfish and self-absorbed. On the other hand Annie Newton (Levieva) is a little hooligan from a poor family. She operates a black market cell phone trade within her high school. When she is turned over to the cops, she suspects Nick. Her and her cronies beat Nick to within an inch of his life. Leaving him for dead, his ghost begins trying to get her to turn herself in. In one shining moment, Nick realizes that he's not dead yet, and instead tries to get Annie to tell someone where his body is. In a strange twist, Annie is the only person who can hear him. It gets a little creepy when he seems to be stalking her, and falls in love with the girl who tried to kill him.
In my opinion, this film was a complete train wreck. You don't want to keep looking, but you can't seem to stop yourself. The directing was shoddy, the camera angles terrible. The acting was second rate at best, with the exception of Chatwin. I found him to have delivered a superb performance, which sadly is undermined by the terrible sea of acting that he's surrounded by. I've officially named Nick Powell Captain UnKillable. The boy is beat with a pipe, dropped 25 feet onto solid concrete, dragged back up the manhole, and dropped 100 feet off a dam onto hagged rocks. Yet through all of this, he's still alive. A little far-fetched? Maybe, just a little. Feel free to insert the sarcasm where you felt was appropriate in that last sentence. There is a moment in Nick's room with a bird, a finch to be exact, who runs into his window. The bird's ghost appears on his shoulder, and when the bird actually stops breathing, it disappears. While I understand that this scene was to give the hint that Nick was still alive, I found it ridiculous. I was biting my tongue to keep from laughing. Then at the end, when Annie is in his hospital room, smearing her blood all over him, their little emotional exchange is completely lack luster. She apologizes and dies, while he is brought back to life. At this point, I was shaking with suppressed laughter.
The last scene was the most ridiculous. Nick goes to visit the late Annie's little brother, finding him flying a model airplane. And to top off the dry and dull emotional scene, Nick is wearing a tee shirt with a finch on it. I howled with laughter until I couldn't see straight. Please, do yourself a favor and don't go see this film. Don't waste your time or money to see if you agree with me, it's not worth it.
