How to talk to the teacher about your child's homework problems

by Jonesy

As a teacher I strongly believe that the student's educational future heavily relies on a good three way relationship (teacher-student-parent). Seriously this is so true. Let's face it, a good parent will only want what is good for their child. If we as educators are to assess the child, we need to inform parents of their child's progress. An end of year report is simply unacceptable. Parents have the right to know how their child is traveling.
Believe it or not teachers are just as nervous about meeting parents, as parents are about meeting their child's teacher. I never know what to expect from parent-teacher interview nights, as I am in the position where I've got to meet a lot of different people from a diverse range of backgrounds. All within a short 2-3 hour period.
Parents should be at ease and relaxed as they are meeting a fraction of this many people, all of whom chose a career that was based on wanting to help children.
I often meet parents about certain issues pertaining to their child's education. One of the main reasons they want to speak to me is homework related. Sometimes there are legitimate reasons why a student cannot complete home studies to the same level as other students. But at least when a teacher and parent get together and communicate with each other, the issues at hand have an opportunity to be discussed and sorted.
My advice to parents, is always talk to their child's teacher about homework issues. If you don't it will only get worse!
