original submission for the first sequel, which involved a time-travelling Enterprise crew ending up on Earth in 1969, ended up being adapted for the fourth sequel. "Star Trek VI", the last of the films based on the original series, was reportedly the last Star Trek film ever seen by Roddenberry: its public release was dedicated to his memory. Roddenberry also wrote the novelisation of the original movie (1979), initiating a new wave of Star Trek original novels.
Simultaneously on television, Roddenberry had brought a new generation of Star Trek into being in 1987; although he only had full control during the show's first season. His health was in serious decline from 1989 onwards; until he died in late 1991. A year later, his ashes were sent into space.
Many tributes exist. Two television series, "Andromeda" and "Earth: Final Conflict", were both based on his previously unaired ideas. He was given his Walk of Hollywood star in 1986, the first ever television writer to be so honoured. Paramount Studios named a building for him. An asteroid and a crater on Mars also share his name.
Perhaps most special, however, was the 2002 renaming of the El Paso Independent School District Planetarium, to the Gene Roddenberry Planetarium. His son cut the ribbon at the dedication ceremony.
