Hypoglycemia is defined as low blood sugar. The body's normal blood sugar range is between 80-120 mg/DL. Most people will always be in this range, but there are others who function with either higher or lower numbers. Recognizing hypoglycemia early may save someone's life. The early signs are dizziness, slight confusion, anxiousness and mood swings. Most people can tell when their blood sugar drops, but some people can not tell at all. I personally can tell when my sugar drops because I get anxious, dizzy and can't concentrate on anything. The best treatment for hypoglycemia is to give someone orange juice, candy or oral glucose. You can only give these items to a conscious person who can swallow and not risk choking. If the person becomes unconscious you must call 911 right away. Paramedics can start an IV and give the unconscious person D-50 (Dextrose 50%) thru the IV. D-50 is basically syrup in a glass tube. I have administered this to many patients and the effects are noticed in a matter of a few minutes. If the person goes untreated they risk going into a diabetic coma and eventually dying.
