to Fern Canyon where they filmed part of Jurassic Park. Buy a map of this area, it is well worth the investment. A visit to any of the parks is worth it. The jetty has lots of seals hauled out. Trinida has great views of migrating whales. The Redwoods are magic. No other way to say it.

*Ferndale is where they filmed "Out Break" and "The Majestic". Awesome deli sandwiches at the butcher shop. Home of the Kinetic Sculpture Race Museum. They display past winners of the Kinetic Sculpture race which runs every year from Arcada to Ferndale. From Ferndale you can side trip south along Mattole Road out to Cape Mendocino, the furthest western point on the Continental United States (That means we don't count Alaska). There is a light house here, but you can't drive to it, you have to hike to it. If you're a hiker, it's great, if not, don't worry. Cape Mendocino has awesome views for whale watching, or just gazing at the ocean. Also note "Battleship Rock".

*Scotia is a town owned by the lumber mill. Corporately owned towns are almost a thing of the past. Imagine losing your job, house and credit at the store all in one day!? Check out the lumber mill tours.

*Willits, Ukiah, Sonoma, Santa Rosa... are all wonderful places to visit with their own histories and specialties. Cute towns are all along highway 101. Between the wine, artisans and the natural setting, bring your sense of adventure and be open for anything. Pick up a local paper and find out what's going on when you get there or check out the town's web site.

If you keep heading south on 101 you'll hit all kinds of cities big enough to fly out of including San Francisco and Los Angeles. I'd fly out of San Francisco or Oakland as Los Angeles is at least a day, 2 day trip away. It's nearly a 22 hour drive between San Diego and Redding traveling on 1-5 depending on traffic, number of stops and driving speed.
