Atheism & Agnosticism

The case against atheism

Atheism is as valid a choice as theism. Neither the atheist nor the theist can prove their position. So the problem with atheism is that it is simply a belief system, like any other belief system, and has no basis in empirical proof. While the existence of God cannot be proved, neither can the non-existence of God be proved. One has to ask of the atheist, what is the value of your belief system? Since you cannot prove that God does not exist, how does atheism make your life better? How does it make you a better person?

Wouldn't it be more honest and more scientific to accept the agnostic position and say, "I don't believe in God but the existence of God has not been proven or disproven?" Atheists put themselves in the position of being martyrs for their cause because they must put up with a lot of harrassment and prejudice in this primarily religious culture in the US. And what of their children? It would be very difficult to grow up in an atheist household unless you simply kept it quiet.

Belief in God and belief that there is no God are equally valid postions to take. But the belief that there is no God carries with it a lot of unnecessary baggage. And if you find yourself among those who are against religion or any belief in God by others, you have created a problem for yourself and put yourself in an antagonistic position that seems to have no benefit.

Why not just say, "I don't believe in God" and let it go at that? Why take an unproveable position and then argue for it with others who hold a different unproveable position? We know what theists gain from their position. What do atheists gain from their position?
