I am not a psychiatrist or psychologist or therapist, but, I am someone that suffered Borderline Personality Disorder for years -but no more. I suffered from virtually every symptom, self-harm, alcoholism, sexual acting out, an eating disorder, and even had a brief period of fire setting and fighting.
here are the actual syptoms.
-Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment A pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships characterized by alternating between extremes of idealization and devaluation Identity disturbance: markedly and persistently unstable self-image or sense of self Impulsivity in at least two areas that are potentially self-damaging (e.g.,cutting, spending, sex, substance abuse, reckless driving, binge eating) Recurrent suicidal behavior, gestures, or threats, or self-mutilating behavior Affective instability due to a marked reactivity of mood (e.g., intense episodic dysphoria, irritability, or anxiety usually lasting a few hours and only rarely more than a few days) Chronic feelings of emptiness Inappropriate, intense anger or difficulty controlling anger (e.g., frequent displays of temper, constant anger, recurrent physical fights) Transient, stress-related paranoid ideation or severe dissociative symptoms.-
For me, all of it was due to my being a very shy girl with a need to express the emotional pain I was in from the abuse I suffered as a child. No excuses here, this is what Borderline Personality Disorder is. I would like to let you know what worked for me and what I could see working for some of my peers at the time.
The borderline is crying out for help, not attention - which is a mistake most make with the borderline and one of the most harmful. I have known too many borderlines that have died just for people to believe it is not for attention. If this statement is made to the one that suffers Borderline Personality Disorder they will go to extremes to let you know it is pain they have and not attention they seek. Also, they will go to extremes to let you know they are in pain, also the borderline sees things only in black or white there are no grey areas. all the borderlines I knew that died were all accidental deaths, some might say accidental suicides!
One had thought a friend would be home in plenty of time to get them to the hospital with an overdose. Another was drinking in a self-harming manner while suffering with diabetes, knowing he was harming himself and hoping for someone would intercede; he died alone.
