Take seven youngsters, their widowed father, a novice nun, and add some singing and dancing and voila! You get 'The Sound of Music'. Personally, I never understood the appeal of this musical, (or any other musical for that matter). Up until my late teens I never saw this musical. Two reasons for that:
1. Our home was always filled with the sound of Bollywood, which is the Indian film industry. The only movies we saw were Indian ones, which in a sense were all musicals, since every half hour all characters would break into a song and dance.
2. Why would I want to watch this movie? My idea of songs includes a lot of music, random song setting, huge number of background dancers, and the main characters singing their hearts out.
Then, one day, during my late teens, I was forced to sit through part of 'The Sound of Music', and I was far from impressed. What was all the fuss about? What does it matter if seven motherless children got a new mum? What does it matter if the widowed man fell in love again? What does it matter if the amateur nun found her true calling as a wife and mother? But that's where I was wrong, because it all does matter.
Every Christmas, 'The Sound of Music' is on at least once one of the television channels. During one Christmas, my family was watching the TV, and we actually watched 'The Sound of Music'. I'm not sure why this time it was different. Perhaps I had more of an open mind because this time, not only did I watch it, I also enjoyed it as I attempted to sing along. (My attempt was in vain, and I should leave the singing to those who can sing, as my family pointed out).
I'm sure it will be on again this Christmas, so keep an open mind, watch it, and enjoy.
So, as a recap, when you take seven children, their widowed father, a novice nun, add a number of wonderful songs, and throw in some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, you get the magic that is 'The Sound of Music'
