Internet scams are usually propagated via email, instant messaging, or websites that utilize spyware or other "black hat" computer software.
When I ran a non-profit computer lab for a year in 2003, I had the responsibility to ensure that any and all clients who used the computers were as safe as possible from scams.
Here is my advice, from experience, take it or leave it.
To avoid email and instant message scams:
1. DO NOT OPEN EMAILS IF YOU DO NOT KNOW THE SENDER
Malicious code can effect your computer if you even OPEN an email from an unknown source. There are a few viruses that are extremely small; repairing the damage caused by these viruses can take a lot of resources.
2. IF YOU RECEIVE AN EMAIL FROM A COMPANY YOU USE, TALK TO A CUSTOMER REP!
There was a recent scam involving criminals sending messages from paypal requesting account verification. These emails were carefully constructed, and involved a recreation of an actual paypal email.
If you receive an email from a company, speak with a live human being to confirm that the email was sent! Customer service hotlines exist for a reason. The representative will be able to verify that the email was sent.
3. DO NOT PROVIDE PERSONAL INFORMATION AT ANY TIME
Scammers often will have "one piece" of your identity already. Provide a scammer with more pieces, and your risk increases.
If a scammer has your birthday information, he or she can verify your birthday and make it appear as if you are dealing with a legitimate person.
Don't forget the most famous saying about computer hackers: The weakest part of security is the human element. Computers rarely fail; it's the people who make them fail.
4. BEWARE INSTANT MESSAGES FROM AUTHORITY FIGURES
There is a popular scam wherein a victim receives an instant message saying something to the effect of: "Your account will be terminated within the next 10 business days."
These instant messages may even have a false customer service number and the legitimate company name!
Read your terms of service to understand the risks of account deletion. Most likely if you have done something to require the deletion of your account, you'll either receive a visit from local authorities, or your account will be deleted immediately without prejudice.
5. BEWARE ACCEPTING FRIENDS ON MYSPACE, FACEBOOK, OR YOUTUBE
Making new friends online is easy and simple. However, it is possible to receive spam and scam requests from people wanting to be your friend. An easy way to detect this is to visit the person's
