Preventing yourself from falling victim to road rage could be the most important lesson you will ever learn regarding driving your car. Accidents, and dangerous confrontations can occur in an instant should you unnecessarily vent your rage while driving. There are several ways that most of us can improve our self-control when confronted with aggravating drivers in our daily travels.
It is not a personal affront when some idiot cuts you off in traffic. Many drivers take it as a personal insult when discourteous drivers create "situations". Driving defensively is a must, and should be practiced without a mind-set to win a confrontation. By staying calm, cool, and collected, everyone benefits by driving on a safer roadway.
Not only should self control be exercised while driving, drivers should exert discipline to begin their trips with plenty of time for travel. Being rushed to get somewhere is part of the reason that we become outraged by other drivers. In the interest of preventing road rage, each of us should organize our travel time.
The next time that you feel your blood pressure rising as a discourteous driver cuts you off, back off and let it go. Imagine yourself walking down a dimly lit street in the most dangerous part of town, acting like an aggressive idiot looking for a fight. Chances are that you would never take that walk, and the same thinking should help you control your emotions when driving. There are a lot of dangerous, and unpredictable people behind the wheels of other vehicles. If you go out looking for trouble, you're likely to find it.
Road rage is not an attractive emotion to experience. It is even less attractive to act on it. The sense of accomplishment, and the peace of mind that you will enjoy by controlling this urge more than justifies the effort needed to avoid it. Life is too precious to waste on negative behavior, so enjoy your next outing in your car without letting anyone affect a perfectly good day.
