There is of course, no such thing as an unhealthy fruit. This being said, my choice for the healthiest fruits would be berries. Most edible berries have wonderful antioxidant properties which help with combating disease and are also anti-aging. Here are some of my favorite berries and the reasons why.
#1 Blueberries
Blueberries are the top choice for health benefits. Blueberries are one of the fruits with the highest antioxidant activity as well as beneficial amounts of vitamins C and E. A serving of fresh blueberries everyday with cereal or yoghurt makes a delicious breakfast or dessert. Blueberries are also good for your eyesight.
#2 Blackcurrants & Boysenberries
The British blackcurrant and the American boysenberry have remarkably similar properties. Current research suggests that blackcurrants and boysenberries may help to prevent Alzheimer's disease and dementia as well as having other anti-aging benefits.
#3 Goji Berries
Much has been written recently of the "superfood" Goji berries, grown mainly in Tibet and Mongolia (so unfortunately only available to us in the dried version) which are reputed to give long life and health. Whether eating Goji berries will extend your life or not they are certainly a valuable source of vitamin C and beta carotene.
#4 Strawberries
Strawberries are worthy of a place on this list as a healthy berry. They not only contain vitamin C, but also B2, B5, B6 and K and minerals potassium, magnesium and copper. Try wild strawberries if you can find them for the most amazing strawberry flavor.
#5 Raspberries
Raspberries also contain valuable vitamins and minerals but perhaps one of the most surprising things about them is that they contain another ingredient which can help in preventing thrush and even irritable bowel syndrome.
There are main other types of berries which have health benefits but these are my top 5. Enjoy berries fresh if you can get them and incorporate them daily into your meals, as snacks or made into delicious smoothies.
