Does Bad Credit = Bad Apple?

I've been applying for employment the first time in close to three years (been self-employed, attending college full-time, and pursuing my writing career). I'm noticing a disturbing trend; everybody wants to run a credit check on me. The premise they put forth is that a credit check is an essential tool that provides the potential employer insight into the character, reliability, and overall quality of the potential employee.

I don't buy that!

Aside from the fact that my credit history and financial records are none of their business, no one can convince me that a person should be judged by their credit score. It's ridiculous!

How can you pay off your debts without a job? But you can't get a job because of your debts? It seems like a no-win situation to me.

Can you politely refuse permission for a corporation to check your credit history? Perhaps you can cite the need for information security in today's world, and that adequate proof of your character and reliability as an employee can be obtained by contacting former employers and references.
